One of the Most Significant Civic Projects in City’s History
- Completion Date 2017
- Budget $370M
- Scale 26 City Blocks
The City of Seattle’s Central Waterfront Project represents one of the most significant civic projects in Seattle’s history. The 26-block long project area includes a diverse range of waterside and upland parcels under public and private ownership and incorporates high profile public open space as well as related transportation and critical infrastructure projects. The transformation of Seattle’s waterfront builds on 10 years of public planning and was made possible by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)’s removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct (State Route 99) and the City of Seattle’s replacement of the deteriorated Elliott Bay Seawall to meet current seismic standards, protect critical infrastructure, and enhance the habitat through this area. These projects open up new public space, from the Olympic Sculpture Park to Pioneer Square, for parks and paths, access to the water, places to enjoy views, vibrant public and cultural spaces, and a new urban street that accommodate all modes of travel and provides an important connection with the City’s transportation system.
SOJ provided consultant team leadership for the Elliott Bay Seawall Replacement Project, one of the largest projects in City of Seattle public works history. SOJ led the multi-disciplinary engineering team during design and managed the GC/CM team during construction. SOJ also provided consultant team leadership for the Waterfront Seattle project’s full range of design, engineering, environmental, economic analysis, and public outreach disciplines during initial planning through concept and schematic design.
