The World's First Zero Carbon Arena
- Completion Date October 2021
- Budget $1B
- Scale 820,000 SF
The new Climate Pledge Arena is the home to a new NHL expansion team — the Seattle Kraken — and the major performance venue for the region. The original arena was built for the 1962 World’s Fair. In order to retain the historic significance of its World’s Fair origins, the reimagined arena was built under the existing 44-million-pound roof. Over the years, it was home to the NBA Seattle SuperSonics and has hosted many iconic events including the Beatles and other popular musicians. Located in the heart of Seattle’s Uptown Neighborhood, the Climate Pledge Arena is the first zero carbon arena in the world. Solar panels combined with off-site supplementary renewable energy will provide 100% renewable energy power, and a “Rain to Rink” system harvests rainwater and turns it into rink ice.
The Climate Pledge Arena, which opened in October 2021, will host the NCAA Women’s Basketball Regionals in 2023 as well as the Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds in 2025. It features premium amenities including local, sustainably sourced food and multiple VIP experience options.
